What is Regression Testing and Why It is required?

Practical QA guidance for mobile apps, websites, games, SaaS products, automation, testing cost, and outsourced software testing decisions.

Regression testing is very clear by its name as it has to be ensured that recent changes in program do not affect the main functionality of the software. During software testing process, we often make changes in the software coding and this eventually leads to the defect in the final product.

In regression testing, previous test cases can be used or new test case can be also implemented. All this is to ensure that eventually things are to be brought on the track properly. Unit testing portion can check small portions of the program while when we check complete or the main functionality then things can change.

Small portions of the code make final functionality ready for the program. It has been seen that some parts of the coding can get commented when we consider entire functionality as a whole. Now we will discuss, why there is requirement for the regression style of testing?

  • If you have done any change in the code after final build then regression testing is must for you.
  • If there is any new functionality added to main function then regression is must.
  • If there is bug fix in the process then this thing should be checked properly.
  • If there is any issue regarding performance then you definitely needs regression testing.
