A single broken button on your checkout page can cost you hundreds in missed sales every hour.
That’s exactly what we discovered when a client approached us with a strange issue: some customers were abandoning their carts right before payment. There were no crash logs, no bug reports — but conversions were dropping.
This case study shows how manual testing uncovered the problem, fixed it, and restored trust and revenue for an e-commerce brand.
🧩 The Challenge: High Cart Abandonment, No Obvious Bugs
Our client, an online fashion retailer based in the UK, ran a beautifully designed Shopify store. Everything seemed to work — until users started reporting frustration with the checkout process.
Key symptoms:
- No bug reports or technical errors in logs
- Analytics showed increased cart additions, but declining checkout completions
- Abandonment rate on mobile devices was higher than average
The store owner suspected it was a UX issue, but wasn’t sure where to begin.
🕵️♀️ Our QA Approach: Manual Testing with a User-First Mindset
Since automated tools like BrowserStack and Shopify’s built-in test modes showed no errors, we approached it like a real shopper — using manual testing on real devices.
🔍 We manually tested:
- Desktop (Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
- Android (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus)
- iPhone (SE, 11, 14, 16 Pro Max)
- Tablets (iPad, Samsung Tab)
- Guest checkout vs. logged-in user
- Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe
🔄 Test Scenarios:
- Add item to cart → checkout → complete purchase
- Try different quantities, shipping locations, and discount codes
- Test with slow internet and offline reconnect
- Inspect the payment screen layout on small mobile screens

🔎 What We Found: The Bug Was in the (Mobile) Details
Manual QA revealed multiple UX and functional issues that automation missed:
❌ Mobile-Only Button Overlap
On iPhones with smaller screens, the “Complete Order” button was partially hidden behind the fixed footer bar — especially when an address auto-filled and the keyboard remained open.
✅ Desktop: Passed
❌ Mobile (iPhone SE & XR): Failed silently
❌ Discount Code Bug
Entering a discount code and pressing “Apply” didn’t show any feedback if the code was invalid. There was no error message — just no response.
❌ Payment Method Confusion
Apple Pay appeared as the default option but wasn’t supported for shipping addresses outside the UK. The fallback option didn’t show unless the page was refreshed.
